The Benefice of the Orwell

The Church of St Nicholas

ARRINGTON

Standing on rising ground to the west of the village, its walls are of local field stones, clunch and red brick. According to records of 1593 the tiled roof of this thirteenth century church was originally thatched with reed and a bell is dated 1583. The lovely timber spire, which was rebuilt in the eighteenth century, is covered in lead. The chancel, nave and west tower date from c1300. In the late sixteenth century the aisles were taken down and the arcades filled in with brick; five windows and the south door were also reset at this time. The tub shaped limestone font dates from the 12th/13th centuries.

Note the attractive east window restored in 2004.
